The exposure you use can change the mood of your images. For instance if you expose highlights as mid-tones and mid-tones as shadows a sense of mystery will be added. You can do this in an opposite manner to see which one you like the best for your purposes.

Backlighting in a scene is hard to control as you do not want flare, but when it is properly used can add impact to a scene. Experiment with backlighting and see what graphic elements it can add.
